A content-based approach leads students through the process of writing with attention to logic, purpose, audience, and patterns of organization. The text concentrates on the academic essay as the basis of other forms of academic writing. High-interest passages come from the major genres of academic and other expository writing, popular periodicals, and literature. The first two lessons are devoted to the paragraph, the next five to essays, and the final one to writing answers to essay exams. An appendix provides exercises on specific grammar problems for those students needing additional practice.
